FORT MYERS BEACH, Fla.- Shrimp, shrimp, and more shrimp! That’s the story this weekend on Fort Myers Beach for the 54th Annual Shrimp Fest. The Fort Myers Beach Lions Club has hosted the festival since its beginning. The club serves up about 2000 shrimp dinners over the weekend for $10 apiece. But in addition to all that shrimp, you’ll plenty more entertainment on Estero Island.

The festival gets going Saturday morning with the parade at 10:00 and that wraps up in Times Square around noon. The Matanzas Pass bridge will be shut down starting at 9:00 am and remained closed until noon. If you want to make it over for the parade, you need to be in line early. Following the parade, the 2012 Shrimp Queen will be crowned at the beach pavillion. More than 100 vendors fill the parking lot by the pier and you’ll find all types of crafts and even more food. You’ll also find official Shrimp Festival T-shirts sold by the Lions Club as well.  All the proceeds to the Lions Clubs go back local charity causes.  Every year, the Lions club raises between $50,000 to $60,000. New Auction Items Announced for Kevin Joe Stahl Fundraiser

A benefit fundraiser for Kevin Joe Stahl, to be held on Saturday, January 21 from 2 to 4 PM at Sanibel’s Matzaluna Restaurant, will have an abundance of valuable auction items offered to those who bid. These include a New York Jets game ball signed by Head Coach Rex Ryan. The authentic game ball has been donated by 2nd Head Coach Mike Westoff. It joins other recently donated items such as gift baskets, jewelry, fine art from Sanibel and Captiva Island artists and galleries, and much more from South Seas Resort, The Bait Box, Bailey’s, Grog Shop, Tuttle’s, Lily & Co, JB Designs and artists such as Alan Maltz, Richard Sullivan, Katie Gardenia, Sheila Hoen. Restaurant also are represented, with Il Tesoro, Sweet Melissa’s, The Mucky Duck, The Lighthouse Restaurant, The Green Flash, Island Pizza and more.

Kevin Joe Stahl, has been the Sexton at St. Michael’s & All Angels Episcopal Church on Sanibel, and an employee at Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife (CROW), which treats and cares for injured wildlife during their recovery. Now, it is Stahl’s turn to be in recovery after corrective surgery for a recent injury damaging four discs in his lower back. During this recovery he is unable to do heavy work associated with his employment.

Sandy Kostick, organizer of the fundraiser, advised that proceeds will  assist Stahl with living expenses while he is unable to work. Kostick added, “We are thrilled at the response from Sanibel and CaptivaIsland friends of Kevin’s. The outpouring of contributions for the silent and live auctions is very gratifying. We look forward to a large turnout Matzaluna on Saturday.

A light buffet and beverages will be served at the event, which will also include live entertainment by Robbie Hutto.  A $10 per person contribution will be collected at the door. There will also be a cash bar.

Those unable to attend the event are requested to send donation checks, payable to Kevin Stahl, c/o Reverend Ellen Sloan, St. Michael & All Angels Episcopal Church, 2304 Periwinkle Way, Sanibel, Florida33957.

SANIBEL MASTERS ART FESTIVAL FRIDAY AND SATURDAY WITH KATIE GARDENIA AND MANY OTHER GREATS

“Sanibel Turtle Garden,” an acrylic on wood painting by artist Teri Causey, has been selected as the poster image for the Annual Sanibel Masters Art Festival, which will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on FRIDAY Nov. 25 and SATURDAY the 26th at the Sanibel Community House. The festival features 75 terrific artists. The proceeds from the event benefit the programs at the Sanibel Community House and BIG ARTS, a home for all the arts.  Admission is free, but donations are accepted at the gates. Regarding this years poster art: The festival hs used a similar type of underwater sea turtle image for the past three years, and this year when we saw the vibrant colors of Teri’s painting, we immediately selected it. The color palette of the painting offered us a chance to freshen up the design. The new colors are so varied from the past that it allowed us to create a similar poster but something that really looks new and fresh. Sanibel Island has a fondness for turtles and we like to keep the poster for this event from changing too much, so that it is recognizable each year.  Many guests have started a Sanibel Masters Art Festival poster collection. Signed posters will be available for the first 50 visitors to Teri’s booth.

She’s a baker, artist and former Bubble Room restaurant owner. And, now she’s an author.

Katie Gardenia, one of the most prominent Sanibel-Captiva area residents, recently released “A Bubble Moment,” a combination cookbook and coffee table book sure to delight residents and visitors to the area. She will sign her book, and sell her fabric sculpture and fiber art pieces, during the Sanibel Masters Art Festival being held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 25 and 26 at the Sanibel Community House.

For years, Gardenia owned the whimsical Bubble Room restaurant on Captiva Island. It was famous for serving the biggest slices of homemade cake, with wedges that looked as if they were designed for an art gallery. In her book, she shares al her recipes including red velvet cake, bubble bread, and orange crunch cake. But, she emphasizes, it’s more than a cookbook. The four-color, hardcover, 117-page book chronicles the history of the Bubble Room building, the people who came in and out of its door, the people who helped create it, long and tall stories, local color, her original recipes, old photos, and page after page of handmade collages. As the reader travels through the story, they will come upon handmade paper pages that have “secret envelopes” that were artfully hand stamped, chalk colored, that are waiting unveil more information.

The Southwest Coast Division of the March of Dimes is preparing yet again for their annual Bikers for Babies events happening Friday through Sunday, November 4th to November 6th.
The weekend will be action-packed, kicking off with a with the CenturyLink Prism TV Battle of the Bands and bike night at Fort Myers Harley-Davidson with live entertainment by Backlash, PUSH, SandFleas, M80 and DVS, vendors, food and refreshments at Fort Myers Harley-Davidson. The events includes a Bike Show on Saturday, local bands jamming it out all weekend in the “Battle of the Bands”, a variety of vendors, great food and beverages, games, pre-registration for the RIDE and much more.

The series of events will start on Friday, November 4th. On Saturday, November 6th there will be a poker run taking riders through beautiful southwest Florida. The grand finale will be on Sunday, November 6th - a 35-mile, law-enforcement escorted ride starting at the North Collier Regional Water Park on Livingston Road in Naples going up Livingston Road to Bonita Beach Road, along Bonita Beach, Fort Myers Beach, ultimately ending at Fort Myers Harley-Davidson. Once at the dealership, there will be a celebration with more live entertainment, food, refreshments, vendors and awards for the individuals and riding groups that have raised the most money.

Other events leading up to the Bikers for Babies weekend include the Big Kahuna Bed Race, Saturday, October 1st at the Cape Coral Bike Night, Poker Nights at Fort Myers Harley Davidson and Naples Harley-Davidson, golf tournament for the medical community at Cypress Lake Country Club and be sure to watch out for the Helmet Drive the weekend of October 8th. Supporters can make a donation at anytime by purchasing “wings” at either dealership as well.

Art Walk kicks off Labor Day weekend in the Fort Myers River District

Art Walk will jump start an active Labor Day weekend in downtown Fort Myers.

The next monthly Art Walk will be held Friday, Sept. 2 with local art galleries and art stops featuring new exhibits and shows.

Then on Sunday, Sept. 4, the River District Alliance will host a Labor Day Weekend Block Party featuring live music on three stages. Those festivities begin at 6 p.m.

The monthly Art Walk runs from 6 to 10 p.m. on the first Friday of every month. The September Art Walk will include more than a dozen art galleries and art stops and will include new art shows, live music, and the traditional after party.

In October, Art Walk will celebrate its third anniversary. This monthly cultural event draws between 1,500 and 2,500 people each month.

Some highlights of the Friday, Sept. 2 Art Walk:

- Art of the Olympians: Table Tennis opening reception and exhibition match featuring former US Open & Florida State Champion Marvelous Marvin Leff.  Also, “21” featuring original works by 21 international Olympian artists. Vocalists Callie Atkinson, Sarah Daigle, and Jordan Pilant, winners of the 2011 Young Artists Awards competition, perform from 7-9 p.m.

- Art League of Fort Myers: Opening reception for Time of Transition exhibit.

- Arts for ACT Gallery: Opening reception for new show featuring artists Philip Heubeck, Sam Brough, and Annie St. Martin.

- Coloring The World: Opening reception for visiting featured artist Scott Guelcher.

Always a collector’s item, new Art Walk buttons will be available at galleries that night. Art Walk has its own T-shirt (in red or black). Shirts are available for a $12 donation at the IberiaBank gallery showcase during Art Walk.

A free shuttle service courtesy of Select Transportation Inc., with stops planned near the art venues, and parking at the Harborside Event Center will be available for Art Walk patrons. Shuttle stops include The Oasis Condominiums, Art of the Olympians, and the Patio de Leon entrance at First Street.

In October, look for the return of the seasonal Saturday Art Fair along the sidewalks of downtown. This will be the third year for the monthly Saturday Art Fair which runs October through April.
