Nicole Glover won the Do The Right Thing in March because she decided she wanted to help someone in need around Christmas.  She collected change and any money she got and filled a jar with it.  She then took the jar to her guidance counselor and asked her to pick a family to receive the jar to buy Christmas presents.     I t was not a lot of money but every little bit helps.

This is Nicoles 3rd time winning DoThe Right Thing always to help someone else or animals.  She is currently in the People to People Ambassador program and trying to raise the money for her trip this summer to England but after that I am sure she will be back to helping others.  Nicole would appreciate any help she can get at Nemomoon@aol.com or 239-849-0198

Fighting America’s high school dropout crisis, local Taco Bell restaurants award more than $4,900 to Junior Achievement of Southwest Florida

Bonita Springs Area, Business, Cape Coral, Downtown Fort Myers, Fort Myers, Fort Myers Beach, Health, Kids

More than $4,900 was awarded to Junior Achievement of Southwest Florida for its week long summer business camp, CEO Academy, by the Taco Bell Foundation for Teens. The funds will support real-world experiential programs that help Southwest Florida teens stay in school and graduate. CEO Academy will serve approximately 40 teens through this Graduate to Go experience grant.

Thirty-two rising high school juniors and seniors from Charlotte, Lee and Collier County High Schools will experience CEO Academy, to be held the week of June 25 – 29 at Florida Gulf Coast University. The purpose of the CEO Academy is to inspire and prepare young people to be the outstanding business leaders and CEOs of tomorrow. High school attendees will learn the mechanics of a business plan based on entrepreneurship, ethics, finance, global economics and marketing. These topics will be presented by local, successful business leaders who will share real-life practicalities of the business world.

“We are honored to be recognized by the Taco Bell Foundation for Teens for our long-time commitment to high school graduation and long-term success among teens,” said Anne Frazier, President/CEO of Junior Achievement of Southwest Florida. “It’s because of partnerships like this that we are able to offer career, community and educational experiences that inspire our teen members to stay committed to earning their high school degree and move onto great things in life.”The Junior Achievement of Southwest Florida is one of more than 250 organizations nationwide that will receive a portion of $2.7 million granted by the Taco Bell Foundation for Teens. Graduate To Go™ is a long-term effort, launched by the Taco Bell Foundation for Teens, to raise awareness of the high-school dropout crisis and encourage teens to get their diploma. The initiative funds real-world experiences, such as job training and college preparation, proven to motivate teens to stay in school. Funds were raised through local Taco Bell restaurant owners and Taco Bell customers. By the Numbers

America’s high school dropout rates are staggering, with one student dropping out of high school every 26 seconds. More than 30 percent of U.S. teens and up to 50 percent of Latinos and African Americans fail to graduate with their class. Dropouts are more likely than high school graduates to be unemployed, in poor health, living in poverty, in prison, or on public assistance.** “The teen graduation crisis is a major hurdle for America as we strive to remain an innovative and powerful global leader,” said Shawn Winkler, Senior Manager Taco Bell Foundation for Teens. “The vital partnerships and programs we are funding today allow Taco Bell to help teens build a foundation for a future success through the vehicle of graduation.”

A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S SING PLANNED TO BENEFIT CCMI; FOOD NEED CALLED “CRITICAL” Sam Galloway

Business, Fort Myers, Health, Kids, Non Profit / Charity

Residents can help feed the hungry and give hope to the needy while enjoying an evening of music and fellowship at the 15th Annual A Midsummer Night’s Sing, presented by First Presbyterian Church of Fort Myers and sponsored by the Galloway Family of Dealerships.

The event, planned for Tuesday, July 24, at First Presbyterian Church in downtown Fort Myers, will be a 90-minute performance of hymns, instrumentalists, and special guests beginning at 7 p.m., with doors opening at 6:30 p.m.

Admission is free, although voluntary cash donations and cans of non-perishable food will be accepted to benefit Community Cooperative Ministries (CCMI – The Soup Kitchen).

First Presbyterian’s pastor, Rev. Paul deJong, is urging the community to help with canned goods and cash donations to help those in need.

“Ladies and gentlemen, we desperately need your help. The need for food continues to be absolutely critical. Please love your fellow neighbor and attempt to do what God would do and want you to do,” Rev. deJong said.

Organizer Sam Galloway, Jr. said cash donations are especially needed because CCMI can buy five times as much food for the same amount of money that residents spend at local grocery stores.

“We can take every dollar and make it stretch as far as is humanly possible,” he said.

Galloway, who has made feeding the hungry part of his life’s work, has arranged for refrigerated trucks to take the food to the neighborhoods that most need help this summer.

“Continued high unemployment and our poor economy have caused many of our neighbors to ask for food to feed their families for the first time in their lives. Our director has told me, ‘Sam, I cannot tell you who, but people are coming for groceries whom you and I know.’ We can’t allow our neighbors and friends to be hungry. Please – we need our community to get together and help with all the canned goods they can. We need to raise the roof with money and food, please!” Galloway said.

Galloway annually sponsors the popular Mrs. Edison’s Hymn Sing as part of the Edison Festival of Light in February. Because more than 4,000 people attend Mrs. Edison’s Hymn Sing in the winter, organizers planned A Midsummer Night’s Sing to allow more local residents to enjoy the same type of activity during the less crowded summer months.

The First Presbyterian Chancel Choir and friends will be featured during the evening, which will include sing-a-longs of well-known hymns everybody knows.

“Please try to bring whatever cash donation you can and at least two cans of non-perishable food And, if you’re among those impacted by our poor economy, come anyway and have a good time,” Galloway and Rev. deJong said.

A Midsummer Night’s Sing is the second of three hymn sings sponsored annually by the Galloway Family of Dealerships. The other two are Mrs. Edison’s Hymn Sing in February and the very popular Holiday Carol Sing in December. All three events benefit CCMI (The Soup Kitchen), which was started by First Presbyterian Church in 1984 to help alleviate hunger and suffering in Lee County.

First Presbyterian Church of Fort Myers is located at 2438 Second St., in downtown Fort Myers. For more information, call 334-2261 or visit www.fpcfortmyers.org

Honeybell Wreath

In London, the New Year has long been announced by church bells ringing out at midnight, bidding the last year farewell and welcoming the coming twelve months. We can’t think of a more cheerful way to ring in the New Year than with our Honeybell Wreath. In this gorgeous arrangement, you’ll find 19 pounds of Honeybells, aptly named for their mouth-watering flavor and bell-like shape and nicely topped with a 4-ounce bag of orange pecans. Order early – these citrus chimes ring through January only. CLICK HERE TO ORDER AND PUT IN THE PROMO CODE: “DAILY” FOR 10% OFF YOUR GIFT PURCHASE! http://www.sunharvestcitrus.com/

Navel Oranges

The Navel, our only variety bold enough to bare its midriff, is justifiably confident. A world favorite, theFlorida navel orange is easy to peel and seedless, contains an incredible sweetness coupled with just the right amount of tang, and offers a day’s dose of vitamin C. Its natural goodness and packaging make it a healthful grab ‘n’ go snack. Citrus trivia side note: the Navel’s “inny” is actually caused by a baby orange within the fruit. Now how cute is that?

Honeybell Tangelos

The Honeybell’s name comes from its flavor, form, and family tree. Its nectarous taste and unique bell shape give it its first name, while its ancestors — the tangerine and pomelo (A.K.A. grapefruit) merge to form its last. More specifically, the Honeybell descends from the Dancy tangerine and the Duncangrapefruit. The result is an incredibly easy-to-peel fruit with savory sweetness. Like all good things, however, the Honeybell season comes to an end — and quickly. Available in January only, so order now!

FRESH FLORIDA ORANGES AND CITRUS ARE IN SEASON WITH SUN HARVESTOrange Basics

In Season: Oranges are at their peak between December and April. Since oranges keep well in cold storage, they can be found in supermarkets throughout the year.

What to Look For: The most common variety of orange for eating is the navel orange, so named because the blossom end often resembles a navel. The skin of a ripe navel orange ranges in color from deep orange to yellow-green. Choose fruit that’s heavy for its size and free of soft spots.

How to Store: Oranges can be stored at room temperature for several days or in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.
