MADE HISTORY! Genae Girard plaintiff in DNA case praises Supreme Court’s ruling: Genae Girard, of Lago Vista 43, was one of six patients who sued Myriad Genetics, DID IT! I could not be more proud. As one of my family members. She took a horrible situation and really did something that turned history. CONGRATS GENAE GIRARD, YOU DID IT! I, Sandy Kostick, the Kostick Family, the Girard Family, the Hundley Family and so many more could not be more proud. As one of my family members. She took a horrible situation and really did something that turned into history. CONGRATS GENAE GIRARD!

In speaking with Genae Girard, it was so incredibly powerful to hear her excitement and yet exhaustion after over 31 interviews in just one day, with many more to come. Wow! And obviously for one heck of a darn good reason. You don’t hit 60 min, land the cover of the NY TIMES, etc. for no reason.  She made history! Young, strong and a powerful lady. This story made news all over the world. This is very exciting for all. Please check out her social media site: http://www.BeyondtheBoobieTrap.com and check out her book, http://offtherackbook.com/“. And her new book on the way. She is now and has been intensely studying with other scientists globally. (YOU GO GIRL!)  (AND THIS IS NOT JUST FOR WOMEN, MEN ARE AFFECTED TOO)

Genae Girard of Lago Vista said she was ecstatic Thursday morning to hear that the U.S. Supreme Court had ruled that a company cannot own a person’s DNA.

Girard, 43, was one of six patients who sued Myriad Genetics of Salt Lake City over the company’s patenting of two gene mutation tests associated with breast and ovarian cancer. The Supreme Court said that company can’t own naturally occurring genes but can patent synthetic strands of DNA that it creates in a laboratory.

“Woo-woo,” Girard said, when contacted at her home. “It changes history,” she said. “It kind of closes the door on other companies being able to patent genes in the body.”

The high court’s unanimous judgment reverses three decades of patent awards by government officials. It throws out patents held by Myriad Genetics on an increasingly popular breast cancer test brought into the public eye recently by actress Angelina Jolie’s revelation that she had a double mastectomy because of one of the genes involved in this case.

Myriad developed tests on the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes that are associated with breast and ovarian cancer and charged around $3,500 for the test, Girard said. She wanted a second opinion after being diagnosed with breast cancer at 36 and testing positive for the BRCA2 gene mutation. But she couldn’t get a second opinion because of the company’s patent, she said.

Girard ultimately had her ovaries and both breasts surgically removed.

“You make health care decisions based on that test,” she said. “It’s a major life changing experience, especially when you are in your 30s and at childbearing age.”

She believes the cost of the test will fall dramatically and that more women will now have access to it. The Supreme Court’s decision “opens the way to more research and reduces our costs,” she said.

MADE HISTORY! Genae Girard plaintiff in DNA case praises Supreme Court’s ruling: Genae Girard, 43, was one of six patients who sued Myriad Genetics. YOU DID IT! I could not be more proud. As one of my family members. She took a horrible situation and really did something that turned history. CONGRATS GENAE GIRARD! I know you personally and know just how hard you worked to make this happen. You have helped mankind in many ways. Thank you is not even enough. :)

DID YOU KNOW?

We can help your business in many ways. Here are just a few reasons:

Do you have a website? Do you have a blog? Are you attached to all Social Media?  Did you know 400 countries and over 368 social networks are attached to our sites? Many try to do this all themselves, rather than focusing on your own business. We do not own a restaurant, a real estate agency, a retail store, etc. We focus on what we are good at. Shouldn’t you? Think about this for a moment:

What if we switched business’s for a day. Could we run yours? Can you run ours? The answer is obvious. NO!  If you have time to do all we offer, you’re not focusing your energy in the right area. Many try to do it themselves. They get off to a great running start and fizzle out. That is why we are so very important to you. The Internet is POWERFUL. Your looking at it right now! Imagine if more people were looking at your business.Ask yourself this:  Do you really have the time and knowledge to do all necessary to accomplish the goals of all this? If you do, your business is not as successful as it could or should be. FACT.

WHAT WE OFFER:

SanibelCaptivaDaily.com was launched in 2008 to promote local business and events. Being extremely successful in that short amount of time, we were forced to open up the FortMyersdaily.com;  and the FortMyersBeachDaily.com with other communities on the horizon.

Our statistics are sound, as they originate in Google’s analytics, greatly effective web-based tools and state-of-the-art diagnostic tools. With our experience and know-how, we can track factual statistics and data about our company’s effectiveness as well as our clients. Our capabilities allow us to monitor visitors to our site and your postings in order to gear your message to your viewer’s desires. This optimizes your exposure to your specified target audience.

Our powerful “add this” button provides the option for the visitor to push the posting onto any of the social networks that they are involved with; launching it out to the world of web.

Unlike other traditional advertising, we average over 500,000 page views or ‘visits which are more beneficial –as opposed to ‘hits’ on a web site. A ‘hit’ would be the same as someone window shopping your business; where as a ‘visit’ equates to a customer actually entering your store to look around.

When we first started, we were all about direct traffic, meaning 100% of the people would have to type in for examplewww.sanibelcaptivadaily.com because we were so fresh.

Today, with our tremendous growth spurt our numbers changed, 48% are coming to us via search engines, 28% coming to us via referring sites, and now 35 % are direct traffic.

We have accomplished this by utilizing Key Words and SEO in addition to websites throughout the world pulling our feeds and putting them on their own sites, an extremely powerful concept. We are also attached to 8 blog directories and over 368 social networks. In addition to that, our site is seen in every state and well over 400 countries. Each time we do a posting on a client; we “Key Word” and optimize our clients business. The more postings we do, the more powerful their business will become.

With all of this in mind, we literally have the power to catapult you like no other out to the world of Google.

Placing an ad on the Daily.com provides incredible results, a great click-through rate is 10%, and our clients average 50% to 99% depending on their positioning. The reason is our limited advertising space, we do this to ensure our clients are seen and not lost. In addition, we have learned, it is not only the ad but the POWER OF THE POSTING.

Our site has 8 pages and every time someone visits; they average clicking on at least 4 pages, and, they spend about 2.5 minutes on the site. Every day 52% of our visits are by first time viewers. Statistics show that over 80% of those new visitors become daily users.

People can’t miss us when we are working in the field. We are dressed from head to toe in our powerful colors: pink and green, branding and logo. When we are out taking photos, we hand out our signature Daily.com cards to every person we photograph. Our cards are so powerful that people like to hold on to them as if they were credit cards. The cards clearly state, where the photo will be seen within 24 to 48 hours.

Along with our packaging options, we offer a great number of extras to help your business succeed and give you the advantage in the competitive world of on-line marketing.

  • Video Production:  A video can be utilized for your company’s web site, online marketing, and television.
  • High Resolution Photography:  With High Resolution photos, you have the capability to use them for graphic designs, brochures, and large needed formats. Not only can we take your photos on land, we have the resources to take professional underwater and aerial photography.
  • News Release: Creating a document customized for your target audience, locally, nationally or international by distributing them to the proper channels.
  • Web Design:  It is extremely important to have a well-known presence on the web which the Daily.com can accommodate. We have the capability to design and create your online personality while optimizing it to full potential, with the best developers around.
  • Social Media Workshop: As we have learned over the years, this will enhance your business as we work together to catapult you into the world of web. We enjoy training our clients how to do things for themselves when it comes to the ever-changing art of technology.
  • Social Media Maintenance: You as a business owner may not have the time readily available to maintain your own social media presence. We offer services where we maintain your accounts/pages for you to free up more time within your daily responsibilities.

And much, much more such as:

  • Mobile SMS Text Package
  • Event planning
  • Q R codes

Just to name a few….It is ever-changing daily.

If your business is not keeping up with the ever-changing trends of online media and you’re not using any if not all of the above, statistics show your competitors who are, already have an extremely substantial advantage.

We look forward to working with you and helping you grow your business through this fast and ever-changing world of technology.

Marine Lance Cpl. Christian Brown, a disabled veteran, was wheeled down to the last row of the airplane and bumped up against aisle seats after he had assumed he would board toward the front. He was embarrassed to tears, the Washington Post reports. What’s more, when two first-class passengers on a Delta airlines flight saw Brown, who lost both his legs after stepping on an explosive device in Afghanistan, suffer a humiliating boarding process, they offered to switch seats with him — a gesture that was refused by the flight attendant, retired Army Lt. Col. Keith Gafford told the Washington Post. “[He] was obviously humiliated by being paraded through the aircraft and was visibly upset,” Retired Army Col. Nickey Knighton, a fellow passenger on the Atlanta to Washington flight wrote in a complaint, obtained by the Washington Post. “I touched Brown on his shoulders and asked if he was okay. Tears ran down his face, but he did not cry out loud.” To make matters worse, Brown was battling a high fever, and was heading to the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Md., according to the Post. Delta issued a statement indicating they were investigating the incident, the news outlet reports. Sadly this isn’t the first time airlines have allegedly mistreated veterans. Last month, former Marine Sgt. Joseph Smith filed a lawsuit against United Airlines and airport workers at Chicago O’Hare International airport alleging that airline workers tipped over his wheelchair while boarding a plane, which caused his catheter bag to spill and left him to soak in his own urine on the flight, CBS Chicago reports. The incident happened two year ago, according to the Post. In July, Jim Stanek, a three-tour Iraq veteran said United Airlines employees kicked his service dog, Sarge, and asked him if he was retarded, the Daily Mail reports. He later posted a YouTube video describing the episode. Stanek, who has a brain injury and post-traumatic stress disorder, says the incident has inspired him to reach out to others who have been mistreated by United Airlines staff and also to raise awareness for PTSD and traumatic brain injuries, according to the Daily Mail. FORT MYERS FLORIDA, CAPTIVA ISLAND FLORIDA, SANIBEL ISLAND FLORIDA: THOMAS C. REED BURNSED

Fort Myers, Health

FORT MYERS FLORIDA,  CAPTIVA ISLAND FLORIDA, SANIBEL ISLAND FLORIDA: THOMAS C. REED BURNSED

THIS LETTER CAME TO ME FROM
AMY BURNSED MCKAY:

Sandy,

Tommy was born in Battle Creek, Michigan June 26, 1949. We don’t know a lot about his early life. We do know that at some point after his birth parents died Tommy moved to Florida to live with his niece. That is when my parents, Jim and Dall Burnsed, met him. This would have been around 1975 and Tommy was probably 25 years old. We lived in a rural area east of Orlando and Tommy’s niece lived in our neighborhood. The situation was not a good one. Tommy was not allowed in his niece’s house. She made him sleep outside in a tool shed. He wasn’t allowed to shower or use the restroom in her house either. She also did not feed Tom. Pretty much, Tommy was homeless and alone. Tommy would walk around the neighborhood begging for food. My mother would make him bologna sandwiches. Once my dad realized what the situation was he and my mom started taking care of Tommy. When they decided to move to Sanibel they didn’t want to leave Tommy behind. I’m not sure how they convinced his niece to let him go with us but they did and, in 1980 my family moved to Sanibel and Tommy moved with us. Since then Tommy has lived with my parents. My parents cared for and loved Tommy as much as cared for and loved all of their other children. Family vacations, family pictures, holidays, everything we did, included Tom. When they moved to the Island my parents took a job managing Blind Pass Cottages and Marina. Tommy would walk around the property and collect coconuts. He made himself a little roadside stand and he would sell the coconuts. Returning guests and residents started calling him “Coconut Tom.” Tommy worked at the very first Lazy Flamingo washing dishes. I’m sure he wasn’t the best employee but everyone loved having Tommy around. In 1982 Jim started working as a fishing guide and Tommy became his first mate. Tommy enjoyed working on the boat with Jim. They were a team! Tommy also loved fishing tournaments. Mostly he enjoyed the parties and trophies that went along with the tournaments. Tommy worked with Jim on the boat until just a few years ago. Then he “retired” and spent his days at home with Dall. He loved Elvis Presley. He spent his days listening Elvis on his stereo and signing along while he made his potholders. He liked to work outside too. He had his own little tractor and would drive around the yard picking up sticks or raking a little. Tommy was born with Down’s syndrome and as the years went on he developed dementia. He also had a heart condition called aortic stenosis. In October 2012 the doctor’s told us that his heart condition was progressing and they gave him 6 months to a year. So, we threw him a party! He loved parties. I hired an Elvis impersonator and he brought Tommy up on stage with him. Tommy danced and sang and had a wonderful time. It was so great because Tommy’s dementia was really bad. My parents were afraid he wouldn’t know what was going on. I always tell my parents it was a miracle. God gave us one more day with the Tom we all remembered. On Friday, February 22, 2013 at 3:05 p.m. Tommy passed away. My mother and my sister, Tracy, were with him. They held his hand and told him they loved him. Tommy was a good man. He was always happy and he loved meeting people. His life’s accomplishments may not seem that great but the impact he had on my family and everyone he met was monumental. Since his passing people say things like, “Your family gave him a great life.” or “He was lucky you’re parents found him.” Bu the truth is Tommy that we are the lucky ones! We are so very lucky that Tom found us! We are all much better people for having known and loved him. Thank-you so much for this! It will mean the world to my mom and dad. They want everyone to know how much they loved Tommy and how important he was. No one should be discarded the way Tommy was. Especially people born with Down’s syndrome. These people aren’t insignificant burdens, they are God’s treasures and they should be loved and cherished. Trust me what you get in return is far greater than what you have to put in. Thanks Again, Amy (Burnsed) McKay

Galloway Captiva Tri/Southwest Florida Events

If you’re thinking of doing the Galloway Captiva Tri, you better race to the event website to register. Last year, there were 500 registrants for the adult race the Galloway Captiva Tri .This year, with the race cap increased to 750 registrants, it is still within a day or so of being sold out.. The adult triathlon on Sunday, Sept. 16, and the children’s tri Saturday, Sept. 15. “We expect both races will be sold out before the weekend,” Kate Gooderham, one of the three race directors, stated.

The Galloway Family of Dealerships is the title sponsor for the whole weekend and South Seas Island Resort is the official resort. The adult race (sponsored by the Zehr Center for Orthopaedics) is a sprint length, comprising a 0.25-mile open-water swim, a 10-mile bike on the roads of Captiva Island (which will be closed to regular traffic for the event) and a 3.1-mile run on the South Seas Island Resort golf path which includes panoramas of the Gulf of Mexico and Pine Island Sound. Athletes will compete in waves based on age and gender. There will be two children’s fun races (sponsored by Jason Gunter, P.A.): The 6-9 year olds will complete a 100-yard swim, 1.5-mile bike and 0.5-mile run, while the age 10-13 racers face a 200-yard swim, 3-mile bike and 1-mile run. The swim course will take place in waist-deep water along Captiva’s Gulf beach, and the course will be lined with adults and life guards. The bike course will be closed to all traffic, and the run course will be along the golf course overlooking the Gulf of Mexico. All children who finish will receive a medal. The official charity for the race is CCMI, Community Cooperative Ministries Inc., an innovative nonprofit 501(c)3 organization made up of social service entrepreneurs fighting to end homelessness and hunger in our community. The agency provides more than 14,000 meals each month through their Everyday Café and Marketplace and Home Delivered Meals programs. CCMI also educates 40 children in their Community Montessori, offers homeless and comprehensive case management services through their United Way Resource House and oversees an emergency mobile food pantry.

Specifically, the Galloway Captiva Tri this year will support CCMI’s Backpack Program, which is currently feeding more than 1,750 students at schools in Bonita Springs, Fort Myers, Cape Coral and Lehigh Acres. Both adult and children athletes can find out more details and register online through the link at the event website, www.captivatri.org. The entire family can make the Galloway Captiva Triathlon a family, fun and fitness weekend at South Seas Island Resort. The Galloway Captiva Tri is presented by Southwest Florida Events Inc., a Florida not-for-profit corporation based in Fort Myers dedicated to combining fun, fitness and support for local charities through multisport events.

Welcome James Robert Silbar to the world. Of Heather Silbar.

Fort Myers, Health, Kids

Welcome James Robert Silbar to the world. Of  Heather Silbar.

Our visit to see Heather Silbar and Mr. James Robert Silbar was amazing.

Baby James Robert Silbar aka: Jimmy, named after Heather Silbar’s Father is beautiful, strong and healthy. 7.10 lbs and 19 1/2 inches born Friday, July 20, 2012 at 10:35. This little guy already knows how to flirt, notice the “wink” lol :) , Wonder where that comes from:) . Heather looked amazing for a woman who just had a child.

It was an honor to hold him. By the way, what a grip already. It was awesome To learn just how many people and especially woman surrounding her during this beautiful moment. It is just extra ordinary.

You find out rapidly just who your friends are quickly when things like this occur. And Heather Silbar, has many to say the least. Very Blessed. I had to laugh, she had her usual Heather Silbar gear in the bathroom. Make-up, Flat Iron all chic stuff….kinda funny, But that it the Heather we all know and love. Heather is strong and very focused. Any and all support would be great. She is an inspiration to many.  So Baby James Robert Silbar got his first experience with the Daily.com….And he was a champ!

With a yawn, he was like “mom is this over yet, geez I know I am good looking and all but come on already, I need sleep” lol .  It was a wonderful experience to see this. It really puts things into perspective of life and just how precious it is. THIS WAS PRECIOUS!  Much love to you Heather and Baby Jimmy. You will Rock this world. Literally! We love you from the Daily :) Click Below to see more pics and of course you can find Heather Silbar on Facebook.

High school attendees will learn the mechanics of a business plan based on entrepreneurship, ethics, finance, global economics and marketing. These topics will be presented by local, successful business leaders who will share real-life practicalities of the business world.

“We are honored to be recognized by the Taco Bell Foundation for Teens for our long-time commitment to high school graduation and long-term success among teens,” said Anne Frazier, President/CEO of Junior Achievement of Southwest Florida. “It’s because of partnerships like this that we are able to offer career, community and educational experiences that inspire our teen members to stay committed to earning their high school degree and move onto great things in life.”The Junior Achievement of Southwest Florida is one of more than 250 organizations nationwide that will receive a portion of $2.7 million granted by the Taco Bell Foundation for Teens. Graduate To Go™ is a long-term effort, launched by the Taco Bell Foundation for Teens, to raise awareness of the high-school dropout crisis and encourage teens to get their diploma. The initiative funds real-world experiences, such as job training and college preparation, proven to motivate teens to stay in school. Funds were raised through local Taco Bell restaurant owners and Taco Bell customers. By the Numbers

America’s high school dropout rates are staggering, with one student dropping out of high school every 26 seconds. More than 30 percent of U.S. teens and up to 50 percent of Latinos and African Americans fail to graduate with their class. Dropouts are more likely than high school graduates to be unemployed, in poor health, living in poverty, in prison, or on public assistance.** “The teen graduation crisis is a major hurdle for America as we strive to remain an innovative and powerful global leader,” said Shawn Winkler, Senior Manager Taco Bell Foundation for Teens. “The vital partnerships and programs we are funding today allow Taco Bell to help teens build a foundation for a future success through the vehicle of graduation.”

A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S SING PLANNED TO BENEFIT CCMI; FOOD NEED CALLED “CRITICAL” Sam Galloway

Business, Fort Myers, Health, Kids, Non Profit / Charity

Residents can help feed the hungry and give hope to the needy while enjoying an evening of music and fellowship at the 15th Annual A Midsummer Night’s Sing, presented by First Presbyterian Church of Fort Myers and sponsored by the Galloway Family of Dealerships.

The event, planned for Tuesday, July 24, at First Presbyterian Church in downtown Fort Myers, will be a 90-minute performance of hymns, instrumentalists, and special guests beginning at 7 p.m., with doors opening at 6:30 p.m.

Admission is free, although voluntary cash donations and cans of non-perishable food will be accepted to benefit Community Cooperative Ministries (CCMI – The Soup Kitchen).

First Presbyterian’s pastor, Rev. Paul deJong, is urging the community to help with canned goods and cash donations to help those in need.

“Ladies and gentlemen, we desperately need your help. The need for food continues to be absolutely critical. Please love your fellow neighbor and attempt to do what God would do and want you to do,” Rev. deJong said.

Organizer Sam Galloway, Jr. said cash donations are especially needed because CCMI can buy five times as much food for the same amount of money that residents spend at local grocery stores.

“We can take every dollar and make it stretch as far as is humanly possible,” he said.

Galloway, who has made feeding the hungry part of his life’s work, has arranged for refrigerated trucks to take the food to the neighborhoods that most need help this summer.

“Continued high unemployment and our poor economy have caused many of our neighbors to ask for food to feed their families for the first time in their lives. Our director has told me, ‘Sam, I cannot tell you who, but people are coming for groceries whom you and I know.’ We can’t allow our neighbors and friends to be hungry. Please – we need our community to get together and help with all the canned goods they can. We need to raise the roof with money and food, please!” Galloway said.

Galloway annually sponsors the popular Mrs. Edison’s Hymn Sing as part of the Edison Festival of Light in February. Because more than 4,000 people attend Mrs. Edison’s Hymn Sing in the winter, organizers planned A Midsummer Night’s Sing to allow more local residents to enjoy the same type of activity during the less crowded summer months.

The First Presbyterian Chancel Choir and friends will be featured during the evening, which will include sing-a-longs of well-known hymns everybody knows.

“Please try to bring whatever cash donation you can and at least two cans of non-perishable food And, if you’re among those impacted by our poor economy, come anyway and have a good time,” Galloway and Rev. deJong said.

A Midsummer Night’s Sing is the second of three hymn sings sponsored annually by the Galloway Family of Dealerships. The other two are Mrs. Edison’s Hymn Sing in February and the very popular Holiday Carol Sing in December. All three events benefit CCMI (The Soup Kitchen), which was started by First Presbyterian Church in 1984 to help alleviate hunger and suffering in Lee County.

First Presbyterian Church of Fort Myers is located at 2438 Second St., in downtown Fort Myers. For more information, call 334-2261 or visit www.fpcfortmyers.org

About Ms. Krug – Dawn was born in northern New Jersey. Raised in a Catholic home, she exhibited psychic abilities in childhood. Friends and family often did not understand what Dawn was speaking of when she talked of voices she heard, past pets she had lost, and loved ones who were no longer present in the physical world. She grew up denying her clairvoyance until 2005, when a traumatic life event caused her to openly accept her gift.

She has been a practicing psychic medium since 2006, with abilities to see, hear, and feel spirit, both physically and empathically. Dawn uses her gift of seeing auras to receive and convey messages about a person’s life, to help balance them through their chakras and coach them to make more positive changes throughout their lives. She has hosted call-in radio shows and appeared on talk radio blogs.

Ms. Krug has worked several missing person cases, with private families and local law enforcement. She uses her intuition to connect with others, including working with women concerning their relationship issues. Working with psychic teens and children is her passion, having a deep understanding of how they feel knowing people in their lives don’t understand the gift that they too are trying to understand.

Psychometry is another way she reads for her clients. She encourages clients to bring items of lost loved ones for her to read. She hosts in-home psychic parties, with the convenience of having the psychic come to you. She also does phone and email readings, or meets with her clients one-on-one for private readings.

In 2010, Nikki organized and led a volunteer yoga program at Miami Children’s Hospital.

Nikki completed a seven-day training program for professionals in MBSR (Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction), under the direction of Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn and Dr. Saki Santorelli of the University of Massachusetts Medical School’s Department of Preventive & Behavioral Medicine. She teaches mindfulness meditation and yogic breathing for stress reduction and wellness.

Over the past eight years, each October, Nikki has been humbled to be able to study the deep wisdom of Nature and various methods of indigenous healing, ensconced in the virgin rainforests of the mysterious Peruvian Amazon.

ZONTA FOUNDATION OF SOUTHWEST FLORIDA AWARDS $8,900 TO SWFAS

Business, Cape Coral, Downtown Fort Myers, Fort Myers, Fort Myers Beach, Health, Non Profit / Charity

The Zonta Foundation of Southwest Florida has awarded an $8,900 grant to Southwest Florida Addiction Services (SWFAS) to provide educational needs for women recovering from substance abuse at SWFAS’ Transitional Living Center on Dixie Parkway in Fort Myers.

The money will be used to purchase computers, software and educational materials for about 25 women in recovery to enable them to complete coursework and file job applications.

The overall goal is to help women in recovery obtain the skills they need to earn a living wage and become self-sufficient in the workplace.

“We are so grateful to the women of Zonta who have so graciously supported our women for many years,” said Transitional Living Center Director Rosemary Boisvert. “Our goal is to remove the barriers that prevent them from being successful. If they need financial assistance for tuition, we can help with that. If they need help with supplies or transportation to get to school or training, we can assist with that as well.

“While at SWFAS’ Transitional Living Center, the women work very hard at learning skills for the job of living in sobriety, this grant will help them build on their newfound skills and give them something more to enhance their chances of maintaining their sobriety and self-sufficiency,” Boisvert said.

“We have been very fortunate to have this long lasting relationship with the Zonta Club of Sanibel-Captiva. The Zonta Club gives our women far more than dollars. They also give of themselves,” Boisvert said.

Zonta has been a partner with the women in the SWFAS Transitional Living Center since 2000 and has provided grants totaling $65,724 to support the needs of women recovering from substance abuse.

SWFAS opened the 16-bed women’s halfway house at the SWFAS Transitional Living Center in 2009. The women’s facility provides treatment for 40 to 50 women per year who have completed the residential treatment program and moved into the halfway house for extended treatment.

SWFAS is the most comprehensive substance abuse treatment and prevention program in Southwest Florida, serving 6,000 people per year from ages 9 to 90. SWFAS offers outpatient and residential programs for both adults and youngsters from five locations in Lee County and two in Hendry County. In addition, SWFAS provides detoxification services for adults, prevention programming, and an Employee Assistance Program for about 50 Southwest Florida businesses.

SWFAS services are not free. Payment plans are available and, in many cases, private insurance may cover some of the cost of treatment. Many prevention and treatment services are partially supported by Lee County and state funding to help income-eligible residents. SWFAS is a United Way agency. SWFAS provides services for all regardless of disability or handicap. Accommodations will be provided upon request.

For more information, contact Boisvert at (239) 338-2977 or visit www.swfas.org.
