HOWL GALLERY PRESENTS: DEEP WITHIN

A Group Show Curated by Zee Cordero
Featuring César Aguilera, Nancy Iannitilli, Heather Nigro

OPENING RECEPTION THIS FRIDAY FEBRUARY 3RD 6-10PM

“Deep Within is a group show that looks deep within the artist and subject matter of 3 local SWFL artists; Cesar Aguilera, Nancy Iannitilli, and Heather Nigro. I have taken the time to explore their art and thoughts asthey create.”
-Zee Cordero, Show Curator

César Aguilera
Born in Quito, Ecuador, César navigated his childhood by virtue of creative observation, learning from his first curiosities onward that imagination and ingenuity have critical roles to play within our human experiences of life. Exploring these roles has led to a lifetime of experimental works and has taken him through a vast spectrum of mediums, techniques, materials and subject matter. Although his approach is always in flux, his objective remains constant: to use Art as a means of finding solutions to problems that plague our world and the societies that inhabit it.

Nancy Iannitilli
Nancy will be a collection of works of Abstract Expressionism, motivated by a newfound sentiment of artistic freedom. “Now I paint only to express my inner spirituality, without a need to please anyone else.” Nancy’s hope is that upon seeing her latest works, viewers are drawn to let their minds wander, using their own imaginations to discover what they may see on the canvas.

Heather Nigro
Transcending beyond the image, Heather Nigro’s photos tell the story of an uncharted journey that is uniquely her own….One of discovering beauty in imperfection, individuality and introspection. Each picture serves as one of the artist’s most profound memories of a moment that happened by chance. The eclectic nature of her personality is reflected in her work, emanating joy, wisdom and light.

Opening reception February 3rd, from 6-10pm at HOWL Gallery/Tattoo during the Fort Myers Art Walk. Free admission with light refreshments provided. Live music on the HOWL back patio.

Show will run Friday, Feb. 3rd – Monday, Feb. 27th

Community Garden, Urban Gardening, Garden, Organic? Lee County, FL. – Heartland Gardens, a not-for-profit community garden in South Fort Myers is hosting for the third season running their fifteen-week organic crop cultivation course, entitled the “Grow Your Food Course”.

Business, Fort Myers, Health, Non Profit / Charity

Grow Your Food Course. Are you interested in: Community Garden, Urban Gardening, Garden, Organic?

Lee County, FL. – Heartland Gardens, a not-for-profit community garden in South Fort Myers is hosting for the third season running their fifteen-week organic crop cultivation course, entitled the “Grow Your Food Course”. The course is now being offered on both Saturdays and Sundays to accommodate demand.  “We’ve had a wonderful response from the community ever since we first held the course! This last Fall we not only filled the forty seats but had a long waiting list prior to it starting. We’re all about serving our local community here at Heartland so we just had to expand the course” said Andrea Guerrero, co-founder of Heartland and course instructor. The course will be taught in Heartland’s unique raised-bed labyrinth and mini-farm from 9:30am to 11:00am and will run for 15 weeks, starting on January 14th for the Saturday class and January 15th for the Sunday class.

The course covers just what its title implies, teaching how you can grow your food right from the comfort of your Florida yard. “Our motto here at Heartland is: Reconnecting you with real food. We want to enable everyone access to the healthiest, least processed, nutrient rich food available. Our students learn to earn the equivalent of $40/hr growing the healthiest and freshest organic food around” said Ben Pino, the courses second instructor. “Just imagine stepping out into your yard to find more organic vegetables growing than you know what to do with” Pino went on to say.

The course goes for 15 weeks to ensure participants full confidence in growing in Florida’s balmy but productive sunny weather. Heartland’s expert staff will guide students in each step essential to organic cultivation, starting with the basics of seed starting and soil building.  Students will advance through the course learning an abundance of skills in permanent agriculture, bio intensive gardening, composting techniques, and sustainable gardening practices. These cultivation techniques will be first covered in a classroom setting and then taken immediately out into the garden. There, teams of 5 students will have a parcel in which they will reinforce the day’s lesson through experiential learning. As students’ crops come time to harvest they will not only enjoy bringing them home but also participate in cooking and food preservation demonstrations right on site.

Priced at $125 for all 15 weeks the course comes out to about $8 per class. This all-inclusive price covers cost of seed, irrigation, curriculum, and guest speakers. Heartland is offering a “bring-a-friend” discount that will reduce the cost of the class to $100 for both students.

Class size is limited to 40 students and seats must be reserved prior to January 14th. Heartland can be reached at (239)689-4249 or on the web at HeartlandGardens.org.

Yeah, they are here: My personal Favorite. Florida’s Fresh Honeybells from SUN HARVEST…..YUMMY

Honeybell Wreath

In London, the New Year has long been announced by church bells ringing out at midnight, bidding the last year farewell and welcoming the coming twelve months. We can’t think of a more cheerful way to ring in the New Year than with our Honeybell Wreath. In this gorgeous arrangement, you’ll find 19 pounds of Honeybells, aptly named for their mouth-watering flavor and bell-like shape and nicely topped with a 4-ounce bag of orange pecans. Order early – these citrus chimes ring through January only. CLICK HERE TO ORDER AND PUT IN THE PROMO CODE: “DAILY” FOR 10% OFF YOUR GIFT PURCHASE! http://www.sunharvestcitrus.com/

Navel Oranges

The Navel, our only variety bold enough to bare its midriff, is justifiably confident. A world favorite, theFlorida navel orange is easy to peel and seedless, contains an incredible sweetness coupled with just the right amount of tang, and offers a day’s dose of vitamin C. Its natural goodness and packaging make it a healthful grab ‘n’ go snack. Citrus trivia side note: the Navel’s “inny” is actually caused by a baby orange within the fruit. Now how cute is that?

Honeybell Tangelos

The Honeybell’s name comes from its flavor, form, and family tree. Its nectarous taste and unique bell shape give it its first name, while its ancestors — the tangerine and pomelo (A.K.A. grapefruit) merge to form its last. More specifically, the Honeybell descends from the Dancy tangerine and the Duncangrapefruit. The result is an incredibly easy-to-peel fruit with savory sweetness. Like all good things, however, the Honeybell season comes to an end — and quickly. Available in January only, so order now!

Healthcare Advice For Your Pet

Holiday Hazards for Pets

With the holidays fast approaching, it is time for family, friends, and celebrating.  Along with them, there will be tons of holiday treats and decorations.  Some of these can present possible hazards for your pet.

Many of our delicious holiday meals are too rich, too fatty or too spicy. Anything like this that your pet is not accustomed to can cause a bout of stomach upset. For some animals, the treat can trigger a serious case of pancreatitis, and that means a potentially life-threatening illness.

Try to avoid any greasy, fatty, or heavily seasoned treats.  You want to make sure you don’t give these to your pet, no matter how cute they are.  Be sure to let your holiday guests and children know not to sneak them any treats as well. A little bit of lean meat can be added to your pet’s meal, but steer clear of the fatty parts and poultry skin. And no gravy!

Holiday decorations can also pose some hazards for inquisitive pets.  The best way to keep your pet safe is to look at everything new that’s in your house for the holidays and figure out the best way to keep it out of the mouths and paws of your pets.

Here is a list of some food and holiday hazards

AVOID These Holiday Food Items:

  • Alcoholic beverages
  • Chocolate (baker’s, semi-sweet, milk chocolate)
  • Coffee (grounds, beans, chocolate covered espresso beans)
  • Moldy or spoiled foods
  • Onions, onion powder
  • Fatty foods
  • Salt
  • Yeast dough
  • Raisins/grapes
  • Macadamia nuts

PLANTS

Lilies can be one of the more toxic plants found in the house for cats.  Try to keep any holiday flower arrangements well out of their reach.   Many types of lily, such as Tiger, Asian, Japanese Show, Easter, Stargazer, and the Casa Blanca, can cause kidney failure in cats.

Poinsettias are often thought of as a toxic plant. In fact, it usually will only cause mild mouth and stomach irritation.

Mistletoe Can possibly cause some heart problems, if ingested in large amounts. Generally, eating a small amount will just cause an upset stomach.

Holly ingestion could cause vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, and lethargy.

HAZARDS AROUND THE CHRISTMAS TREE

Christmas tree water if ingested can cause stomach upset. Stagnant tree water can be breeding grounds for bacteria, which can also lead to vomiting, nausea, and diarrhea.

Electric cords- At any time of the year should are a risk for pets that love to chew, especially your cute new puppy/kitten!

Ribbons or tinsel can get wrapped up and stuck in the intestines, causing intestinal obstruction.

Glass ornaments can cut the tissues of the gastrointestinal tract if ingested.

Potpourris Pets are often exposed to liquid potpourri by direct ingestion from simmer pots or spills, or by rubbing against leaky bottles or simmer pots containing the potpourri. Exposure of pets to some types of liquid potpourris can result in severe mouth, skin, or eye damage. Dry potpourri usually doesn’t cause those issues.

In the event the worst should happen, you should have three important numbers:  Your personal veterinarian, your closest emergency vet should an issue arise after regular business hours, and the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (1-888-4 ANI-HELP).  Hopefully these tips will help you avoid a holiday mishap, or at least be prepared in the event one does occur.

Wishing you a happy, emergency free Holiday Season!

We look forward to working with you to ensure your pet’s senior years are as happy, healthy, and long as possible. Please call us at (239) 466-5555 for an appointment or visit your Pet Portal to learn more.

Six Tips for Keeping Your Dog Cool. From Indian Creek Veterinary Hospital in Fort Myers, Fla

What To Do If You Think Your Dog is Heat Stressed
The normal temperature of a dog is 100 to 102.5 degrees Fahrenheit . You should worry if the temperature is 105 degrees or above. You can use any human oral thermometer in the dog; place it two to three inches into the rectum for a minute.

If your dog is overheated, you should provide them with plenty of drinking water. Put cool water over the entire dog to help bring their body temperature down. If there is a limited amount of water, you should wet the ear flaps and the feet first. An alternate liquid that can be good for cooling purposes is rubbing alcohol.

Next, you need to take the dog to your veterinarian immediately. If your dog has heat stroked, there are other treatments that need to be performed other than just cooling him with water.

Many areas of the world are seeing record high temperatures, which makes it even more important to ensure that your pets are kept cool. Veterinarians commonly see dogs with heat stroke, but most of these cases could easily have been averted with some easy precautions.

The following six tips will help you keep your dog cool:

  1. The best method for keeping your dog cool is to simply allow him or her to stay inside a house with air conditioning.  Dogs want to be part of the family and almost always enjoy being inside.
  2. If your dog must be kept outside in the heat, one tool to help keep your dog from overheating is a child’s small hard plastic swimming pool. Place it in a shaded area of the yard and fill with a few inches of water. Your dog can drink from it, walk through it, or even lie in it.
  3. Misters are another good tool which can be installed on your patio or any shaded area of your back yard. These emit a fine mist of water that your dog can use to keep cool.
  4. Another trick is to take large plastic jugs such as milk containers, fill them with water and then freeze them.  Place outside in an area where your dog usually stays, preferably in a shaded area.  Behind the ice-filled jugs, place an electric fan so it blows across the ice and creates a cool breeze for your dog.
  5. Of course, never leave your dog in a car without the air conditioning on.  Even in relatively mild outdoor temperatures, on a sunny day the environment inside the car can get dangerously hot in just a few minutes.
  6. Never leave your dog tied to a tree or a post. A common scenario is for a dog to keep circling the tree, winding the rope shorter and shorter until it is caught close to the tree trunk. As the sun moves across the sky, eventually the dog is in the full sun, and not able to reach its water bowl to try to help keep itself cool. Heat stroke can quickly ensue.

If your dog is heat stressed, it will be panting heavily, with its tongue hanging out long and wide. This increases the surface area of the tongue and allows for more evaporation to happen, which helps keep your dog cool. Another symptom is the color of the gums will be a very bright red or sometimes a muddy color. If you notice any of these symptoms, take action immediately! Cool down the dog and call your veterinarian for further instructions.

Heat stroke in dogs is usually easily preventable. Using these tips will let you enjoy hot weather safely with your dog and may even save your dog’s life! For more info: go to: http://www.indiancreekvet.com/
