One of our fans got this for us when they happend to see it while shopping! Thank you very much for thinging of us Kevin!

1 in 5 dogs are suffering in silence, is yours?

Animals

Does your dog suffer from a lower activity level, stiffness, limping or inability to jump? If so, he may be one of the millions of dogs living with the pain of canine osteoarthritis. Unfortunately, many pet owners confuse these conditions to be signs of just growing old and do not realize their dogs are in pain.

Your dogs health and happiness are what matters most to us. If he is showing any of these signs, we can help. Our hospital takes a “multimodal” approach to joint and mobility care, which means we get the best possible results for pets by using different therapeutic options that work together.

Visit www.treatdogarthritis.com to complete a simple checklist to see if your dog may be at risk of suffering from painful canine osteoarthritis and to learn more about what treatment options are now available. You may also download valuable money saving offers for multimodal products in our office.

If you think your dog may be suffering from the pain of arthritis, please contact our office for an orthopedic appointment and ask us about a multimodal treatment plan that is right for your dog.

The Octagon, Local Wildlife Sanctuary

Animals, Entertainment, Fort Myers, Non Profit / Charity, Photography

The Octagon  The Octagon, Local Wildlife Sanctuary

A lot of people do not know about the wildlife sanctuary called the Octagon in Fort Myers. This place is a hidden gem within Lee County! It provides a healthy recovery and living environment for abandoned and abused exotic wildlife. NONE of the animals have been taken out of the wild! They all come from abused, injured or unwanted situations.

Octagon is a non-profit, charitable 501(c) (3) organization. Their motto is helping animals in need and that is just what they do!

Volunteers are always needed for the Octagon, if you are an animal lover and would like to donate some of your time to a great and rewarding cause, please check out their link here.

With animals ranging from a Liger (Half Tiger / Half Lion) to a raccoon, the octagon helps them all. It is sad to see many of these animals because they came to the Octagon declawed and abused, through the help of volunteers and Lauri Caron, owner and operator, they on the road to recovery. With well over 100 animals, the Octagonis truly an amazing place. Because the Octagon is a non-profit, volunteers are crucial to the success of the facility and care for these animals. Volunteers range from wonderful veterinaries like Dr. Dieter, Dr. Scott, Dr.Winter, Dr. Bogert, Dr. Folk, to other volunteers who give up Saturdays and Sundays to help out around the 10 acre property.

“What a pleasure to work with Lauri, she is incredible woman, hard working, and passionate. She truely loves what she does and cares so deeply for all of the animals she helps. It is an honor to know her!” Sandy Kostick, owner of the SanibelCaptivaDaily.com.

NEWS JUST IN! J.N. Rare Wildlife Sighting: Florida Black Bear on Sanibel “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge

Animals

Rare Wildlife Sighting: Florida Black Bear on Sanibel
Rare Wildlife Sighting: Florida Black Bear on Sanibel
On Monday June 27 at 5:30am the J.N ‘Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge remote camera capture an image of a Florida Black Bear on the refuge. Lead Biologist, Tara Wertz discovered and verified the sighting today. The bear looks to be a sub adult blackbear approximately 1.5 years old weighing 40-60 pounds. This bear was photographed by a motion activated, infrared camera at the Bailey Tract, 100-acre freshwater satellite parcel of the refuge. This poses NO immediate threat but residents and visitors should take precautionary measures to keep all food and garbage secured and stored inside.
Black bears are native to Florida and are protected under state and federal laws.Dwindling populations in Florida has caused this sub species to be listed as “threatened”under the Endangered Species Act. It is illegal to approach or harass this animal.
Sub adult black bears are kicked out by their mother in early summer at age 1.5 years old.Young males tend to disperse long distances from their natal areas while young females tend to stay close to their mother’s home ranges. Bears are most active at night and are opportunistic feeders, eating almost anything, including grass, insects, small mammals and carrion (dead things).
Please report any sightings to the refuge’s Lead Biologist Tara Wertz at 239/ 472-1100×231.

Conservancy of Southwest Florida unveils new logo, evolves mission and brand
Conservancy retires “Saving Southwest Florida” campaign logo

NAPLES, Fla. (May 19, 2011) –  Upon raising $38.8 million and exceeding its “Saving Southwest Florida” capital campaign goal, the Conservancy of Southwest Florida has retired its campaign logo, unveiling a new logo to represent the “reborn” Conservancy and to evolve the brand identity of the Conservancy.

The Conservancy of Southwest Florida Marketing and Development Committee, chaired by board member Maureen Lerner, provided the leadership and guidance for this important step. Conservancy of Southwest Florida Director of Marketing and Communications Barbara Wilson and Graphic Designer Kate Kintz devoted countless hours of research and explored over 100 potential designs to ensure the logo accurately reflected the Conservancy of Southwest Florida “brand.”

“We believe the new logo represents the next generation of the Conservancy of Southwest Florida,” said Wilson.  “Our research indicated that logo revision is a very disciplined, deliberate process, and we did not take on the task lightly. We adhered to the best practices and guidelines for logo revisions implemented by environmental organizations and some of the largest brands in the world as they evolved their mission and brand.”

Wilson added that it was very important to keep the rich history of the Conservancy in the new logo.  “We accomplished this by maintaining the historical green color, the typeface and the eagle, all core elements of the previous logo,” she said. “The eagle, although updated, is still the main feature. It has been part of Conservancy history from the beginning. Its keen eyesight keeps track of our environment. Furthermore, the eagle is a brave animal and is not afraid to stand up for what is right. Once on the endangered species list, it represents hope for all native wildlife. We added the blue color to represent the water element of our mission, while the green represents the land. All three elements, the water, land and wildlife, capture the essence of our mission.  Lastly, the new color yellow was added to signify the dawning of a new age and a bright future for the Conservancy of Southwest Florida, the community and our quality of life.”

About the Conservancy of Southwest Florida:
The Conservancy of Southwest Florida began in 1964 when community leaders came together to defeat a proposed “Road to Nowhere” and spearheaded the acquisition and protection of Rookery Bay. The Conservancy is a not-for-profit grassroots organization focused on the critical environmental issues of the Southwest Florida region with a mission to protect the region’s water, land and wildlife.  This is accomplished through the combined efforts of environmental education, science and research, policy and advocacy and wildlife rehabilitation. The Wildlife Rehabilitation Clinic treats more than 2,400 injured, sick and orphaned animals each year and releases about half of them back into their native habitats. The Conservancy of Southwest Florida and Nature Center is located in Naples, Fla. at 1450 Merrihue Dr., off Goodlette-Frank Road at 14th Avenue North. For information about the Conservancy of Southwest Florida, call 239-262-0304 or visit www.conservancy.org.

G’day! The following letter is from a client of Bark Busters in need of a new home for her dog.  This dog comes with a training guarantee which is valid anywhere in the world where there is a Bark Buster trainer but does expire on February 14, 2012.  If you are able to help, please contact the owner directly.

Hello.  My name is Lovee.  They call me that because I love “everything.”  I love kids, people, other dogs and life!  I am almost a year old, am half Shih Tzu, weigh about 23 lbs. and am spayed.  My owners love me so much but have developed physical problems that make it difficult to care for me.  I have lots of energy.  Mom says I am cute and sweet but wants the best for me.

February is dental health month for pets and a perfect time to schedule a visit for an examination!

Keeping your pet’s teeth and gums in good shape has many more benefits than just fresh breath. Regular cleanings and a few minutes of brushing each week can help give your pet a longer, healthier life.

Bad breath in pets is just one sign of dental disease that can lead to other health problems. What’s more, like people, your pet needs routine dental care too. Most dogs and cats develop dental disease by 3 years of age. And the faster the disease is treated, the easier it is to manage.

Warning signs to look for in your pet
•   Bad breath
•   Sensitivity around the mouth
•   Loss of appetite
•   Yellow or brown deposits on the teeth
•   Bleeding, inflamed, or receding gums
•   Loose or missing teeth

Lions, Tigers and Bears in Fort Myers? That’s right, all of these animals and more, right here in our town of Fort Myers. These creatures are living at the Octagon, a wildlife sanctuary providing a healthy recovery and living environment for abandoned and abused exotic wildlife.

We had the pleasure of taking the grand tour with Officer JoAnne Adams and Lauri Caron, owner and operator of this amazing facility. Lauri was kind enough to walk us around and give us a background story on the octagon and each individual animal!

AVOIDING HOLIDAY UPSETS FOR OUR LOVING COMPANIONS, Indian Creek Pet Hospital, Vet for Fort Myers and Sanibel & Captiva

The holiday season can be a dangerous time for our pets.  There are so many health hazards we don’t think about and for some we simply lack the proper knowledge. There are issues as basic as keeping your pet secured when guests come and go from your home to knowing which foods and plants are poisonous to your pet.  If you believe your pet has consumed a toxic substance, immediately seek advice from your local veterinarian or veterinary emergency hospital.  You may need to start a consultation with the Animal Poison Control Center (APCC) by calling 888-426-4435.  The APCC is a service offered by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals(ASPCA).  It is worth the $60 spent on this consultation, as a board-certified veterinary toxicologist will advise you and your veterinarian on how to best address your pet’s particular toxicity.

Check out the great staff:

Holiday Foods – 1)  Turkey, chicken or steak bones – Your pet may be too tempted and sneak a bone out of the trash while you are busy with your guests.  The bones can potentially splinter and become lodged in the throat, stomach or puncture the digestive tract. 2) Fatty foods – Fatty foods can cause pancreatitis which is a serious condition that causes abdominal pain, vomiting, depression and occasionally shock and death. It could be from a well intentioned family member wanting to give your pet a special treat from the holiday table or the trimmings from the meat.  Educate your guests so your pet doesn’t suffer later. 3) Large quantities of any food – Some pets will eat until they bloat.  This can cause severe gastric dilatation and torsion.  This is an emergency and many times pets do not survive. So make sure all trash cans are secure and all food is out of your pet’s reach. 4) Toxic foods – Did you know that chocolate, grapes, raisins, macadamia nuts, onions, xylitol (artificial sweetener commonly found in sugarless candy, baked goods and toothpaste), caffeine, coffee, alcohol, avocado, and yeast dough are toxic to your pet?  Be careful that your pet does not ingest any of these.

Holiday Plants – 1) Mistletoe – Can cause gastrointestinal disorders and cardiovascular collapse (shock).  2) Poinsettias – They are irritating to the mouth and stomach and sometimes causes vomiting. 3) Holly – The red berries on the plant can be poisonous if consumed in large amounts causing vomiting and diarrhea.  The best approach is to keep the plants out of your pet’s reach.

Holiday Decorating  – 1) The Christmas tree – The water may contain fertilizer, preservatives and bacteria which can upset your pet’s stomach so keep it covered.  The tree itself should be secure so a cat or kitten doesn’t climb the tree causing the tree to fall. Pine needles if ingested can puncture your pet’s intestines so check around holiday trees frequently. 2) Tinsel, ribbon, garland – These are tempting and can wrap around intestines or ball up in the stomach. String objects are to be safeguarded at all costs. 3) Candles or the menorah – Your cat may wander too close to the flame resulting in burns or a playful dog may bump into a table and knock a candle over starting a fire. Anchor candles securely and away from curious faces and feet.  4) Holiday lights mean more electrical cords for kittens and puppies to chew.  Be sure you have cords secured and out of the way. ID #:  484794
Breed: Hound Mix
Sex:  Male
Age:  5 months old
Color:  Tri-colored
Comments:
I’ve had a ‘Ruff’ start to my life.  I was brought to Animal Services by a kind woman who found me lying in the middle of the road after being hit by a car. My leg was badly broken, I had a hairline fracture to my pelvis, and lots of road rash over my body.  Through special funding from donations, I was able to have surgery and went to a foster home to recover.  I was named Chance.  It’s been about five weeks and now I’m back to health and ready to find a forever home.  So what do you think?  Would you like to give me another ‘Chance to find a good home.
Adoption Fee:  $75 or $50 during November when you donate an item from the shelter’s Wish List.

Comments: My owner moved and did not take me with her so here I am at the shelter looking for a new home.  All of us pets need a second chance to find a good home.  Please come visit me – I’m a very handsome, big boy that loves to give and get attention.  If you scratch my chin I’ll love you forever!
Adoption Fee: $25 or free during November when you donate an item from the shelter’s Wish List.

Indian Creek Pet Hospital, Vet for Fort Myers and Sanibel & Captiva

Animals, Fort Myers

Indian Creek Pet Hospital, Vet for Fort Myers and Sanibel & Captiva

Dear Pet Owner:

Pets, like people, need regular dental care. Advancements in veterinary medicine have shown that animals who do not receive dental care are at risk for gingivitis, periodontal disease, and subsequent kidney, liver and heart problems.

85% of adult pets have periodontal disease. Many times, the first sign an owner notices is bad breath in their pet. Unfortunately, by this time, periodontitis may already be in its 3rd or 4th stage! What often goes unnoticed is the preceding inflamed gums, plaque and tarter buildup and the accompanying pain which can cause changes in eating habits, behavior and a decline in overall health.

We encourage all pet owners to brush their pet’s teeth and use dental products such as Aquadent, CET chews and Hills Prescription Diet T/D. Having your pet’s teeth professionally cleaned once or twice yearly is also highly recommended.

We at Indian Creek Pet Hospital are committed to helping you provide your pet with a long, healthy life. In support of this mission, we are offering our dental services at a 15% discount beginning October 11th thru November 30th.  This includes pre-anesthetic bloodwork, ultrasonic dental work (cleaning and polishing), fluoride treatment, dental x-rays, Oravet protective gel, plus extractions and treatment of gingivitis, as determined necessary by Dr. Davis. Although a rough estimate of the degree of dental disease can be made while the patient is awake, the full extent can only be assessed while the patient is under anesthesia.

Appointments are limited and are done on a first come, first served basis. Please call us at 239-466-5555 for more information or to schedule dental work or a free dental screening.

We would also like to let you know we feel we have the best groomer in the world!!!  Her name is Cody Melfi and she is available Tuesday through Friday by appointment.  Please stop in or call.  We think you and your pet will be delighted when you meet her and allow her the opportunity to groom your pet.

Sincerely,
Dr. Davis and staff

Welcome Dr. John Davis from Indian Creek Pet Hospital. He is our new Tips Expert for Fort Myers & Fort Myers Beach. Click here for some helpful pet tips like the one below!

Pets need frequent wellness check ups because they age 5 to 7 times faster than humans.  Your pet can’t talk and many times shows no signs when something is wrong.  It is part of the survival instinct to hide their illnesses.  Six month exams are of utmost importance in the detection of diseases.  Wellness screenings help diagnose health problems in their early stages before symptoms occur.
