A Really Beautiful Bird Around Southwest Florida.

Pileated woodpeckers, the largest woodpeckers in North America, hammer their heads into trees with a force of 15 mph, 20 times a second. So, how do their heads not turn to mush?

Thick muscles, sponge-like bones, and a third eyelid keep bird brains intact. For more information, go to: http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/pileated_woodpecker/id/nc

Indian Creek Animal Hospital Fort Myers Florida

Doctors of Veterinary Medicine and Veterinary Surgeons are medical professionals whose primary responsibility is protecting the health and welfare of animals and people. The term “Veterinarian” comes from veterinae, which means “working animals.” Every veterinarian has gone through extensive medical training for animals and has received a license to practice veterinary medicine.

Veterinarians diagnose and control animal diseases, treat sick and injured animals, prevent the transmission of animal diseases to people, and advise owners on proper care of pets and livestock. They ensure a safe food supply by maintaining the health of food animals. Veterinarians are also involved in wildlife preservation and conservation and public health of the human population.

You are probably most familiar with veterinarians who specialize in pet medicine in a clinical setting such as an animal hospital or veterinary clinic. During each visit, this type of veterinarian will be able to guide you in all aspects of pet maintenance, including food requirements, daily care, and any special needs. They will also be able to provide vaccinations, complete surgery, and even prescribe medicines as needed. Pet care tips from Dr. Jon Shivers Indian Creek Pet Hospital Holiday Hazards for Pets

Healthcare Advice For Your Pet

Pet care tips from Dr. Jon Shivers

Holiday Hazards for Pets

With the holidays fast approaching, it is time for family, friends, and celebrating.  Along with them, there will be tons of holiday treats and decorations.  Some of these can present possible hazards for your pet.

Many of our delicious holiday meals are too rich, too fatty or too spicy. Anything like this that your pet is not accustomed to can cause a bout of stomach upset. For some animals, the treat can trigger a serious case of pancreatitis, and that means a potentially life-threatening illness.

Try to avoid any greasy, fatty, or heavily seasoned treats.  You want to make sure you don’t give these to your pet, no matter how cute they are.  Be sure to let your holiday guests and children know not to sneak them any treats as well. A little bit of lean meat can be added to your pet’s meal, but steer clear of the fatty parts and poultry skin. And no gravy!

Holiday decorations can also pose some hazards for inquisitive pets.  The best way to keep your pet safe is to look at everything new that’s in your house for the holidays and figure out the best way to keep it out of the mouths and paws of your pets.

Here is a list of some food and holiday hazards

AVOID These Holiday Food Items:

  • Alcoholic beverages
  • Chocolate (baker’s, semi-sweet, milk chocolate)
  • Coffee (grounds, beans, chocolate covered espresso beans)
  • Moldy or spoiled foods
  • Onions, onion powder
  • Fatty foods
  • Salt
  • Yeast dough
  • Raisins/grapes
  • Macadamia nuts

PLANTS

Lilies can be one of the more toxic plants found in the house for cats.  Try to keep any holiday flower arrangements well out of their reach.   Many types of lily, such as Tiger, Asian, Japanese Show, Easter, Stargazer, and the Casa Blanca, can cause kidney failure in cats.

Poinsettias are often thought of as a toxic plant. In fact, it usually will only cause mild mouth and stomach irritation.

Mistletoe Can possibly cause some heart problems, if ingested in large amounts. Generally, eating a small amount will just cause an upset stomach.

Holly ingestion could cause vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, and lethargy.

HAZARDS AROUND THE CHRISTMAS TREE

Christmas tree water if ingested can cause stomach upset. Stagnant tree water can be breeding grounds for bacteria, which can also lead to vomiting, nausea, and diarrhea.

Electric cords- At any time of the year should are a risk for pets that love to chew, especially your cute new puppy/kitten!

Ribbons or tinsel can get wrapped up and stuck in the intestines, causing intestinal obstruction.

Glass ornaments can cut the tissues of the gastrointestinal tract if ingested.

Potpourris Pets are often exposed to liquid potpourri by direct ingestion from simmer pots or spills, or by rubbing against leaky bottles or simmer pots containing the potpourri. Exposure of pets to some types of liquid potpourris can result in severe mouth, skin, or eye damage. Dry potpourri usually doesn’t cause those issues.

In the event the worst should happen, you should have three important numbers:  Your personal veterinarian, your closest emergency vet should an issue arise after regular business hours, and the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (1-888-4 ANI-HELP).  Hopefully these tips will help you avoid a holiday mishap, or at least be prepared in the event one does occur.

Wishing you a happy, emergency free Holiday Season!

We look forward to working with you to ensure your pet’s senior years are as happy, healthy, and long as possible. Please call us at (239) 466-5555 for an appointment or visit your Pet Portal to learn more.

A LITTLE  HELP FROM C.R.O.W

Yesterday, a little turtle came across me and was determined to head to the road. I tried several times to turn him around and away from the road and it was so determined to get to it’s destination.  I placed a call to C.R.O.W on what to do. Kevin Stahl gave me advise to help. He suggested: to take him across the road, as he was looking for water.  Thank heaven for C.R.O.W. We have a safe turtle, what could have been a tragedy. If you find any animals that need help, please contact C.R.O.W: 239-472-3644 .  p.s: I also learned this was a female and not little at all………………wow………good deed for the day. Yah!

Feast of St Francis of Assisi on October 4

Animals

Many churches in the United States celebrate the Feast of St Francis of Assisi on October 4 each year. The feast commemorates the life of St Francis, who was born in the 12th century and is the Catholic Church’s patron saint of animals and the environment. It is a popular day for pets to be “blessed”.  As you can tell my dog Bear was in deep thought, prayer and meditation. (or he forgot his sunglasses)  These animals had a great time making friends, getting blessed and they even got a treat! These pictures are from St. Michael & All Angels Church on Sanibel Island. Blessing by: Rev Dr.  Ellen Sloan

Six Tips for Keeping Your Dog Cool. From: Indian Creek Veterinary Hospital in Fort Myers, Fla

Animals, Bonita Springs Area, Business, Cape Coral, Fort Myers, Fort Myers Beach, Non Profit / Charity

Six Tips for Keeping Your Dog Cool. From Indian Creek Veterinary Hospital in Fort Myers, Fla

What To Do If You Think Your Dog is Heat Stressed
The normal temperature of a dog is 100 to 102.5 degrees Fahrenheit . You should worry if the temperature is 105 degrees or above. You can use any human oral thermometer in the dog; place it two to three inches into the rectum for a minute.

If your dog is overheated, you should provide them with plenty of drinking water. Put cool water over the entire dog to help bring their body temperature down. If there is a limited amount of water, you should wet the ear flaps and the feet first. An alternate liquid that can be good for cooling purposes is rubbing alcohol.

Next, you need to take the dog to your veterinarian immediately. If your dog has heat stroked, there are other treatments that need to be performed other than just cooling him with water.

Many areas of the world are seeing record high temperatures, which makes it even more important to ensure that your pets are kept cool. Veterinarians commonly see dogs with heat stroke, but most of these cases could easily have been averted with some easy precautions.

The following six tips will help you keep your dog cool:

  1. The best method for keeping your dog cool is to simply allow him or her to stay inside a house with air conditioning.  Dogs want to be part of the family and almost always enjoy being inside.
  2. If your dog must be kept outside in the heat, one tool to help keep your dog from overheating is a child’s small hard plastic swimming pool. Place it in a shaded area of the yard and fill with a few inches of water. Your dog can drink from it, walk through it, or even lie in it.
  3. Misters are another good tool which can be installed on your patio or any shaded area of your back yard. These emit a fine mist of water that your dog can use to keep cool.
  4. Another trick is to take large plastic jugs such as milk containers, fill them with water and then freeze them.  Place outside in an area where your dog usually stays, preferably in a shaded area.  Behind the ice-filled jugs, place an electric fan so it blows across the ice and creates a cool breeze for your dog.
  5. Of course, never leave your dog in a car without the air conditioning on.  Even in relatively mild outdoor temperatures, on a sunny day the environment inside the car can get dangerously hot in just a few minutes.
  6. Never leave your dog tied to a tree or a post. A common scenario is for a dog to keep circling the tree, winding the rope shorter and shorter until it is caught close to the tree trunk. As the sun moves across the sky, eventually the dog is in the full sun, and not able to reach its water bowl to try to help keep itself cool. Heat stroke can quickly ensue.

If your dog is heat stressed, it will be panting heavily, with its tongue hanging out long and wide. This increases the surface area of the tongue and allows for more evaporation to happen, which helps keep your dog cool. Another symptom is the color of the gums will be a very bright red or sometimes a muddy color. If you notice any of these symptoms, take action immediately! Cool down the dog and call your veterinarian for further instructions.

Heat stroke in dogs is usually easily preventable. Using these tips will let you enjoy hot weather safely with your dog and may even save your dog’s life! For more info: go to: http://www.indiancreekvet.com/

FORT MYERS VETS OFFER GREAT DEALS, COUPONS AND SPECIALS

DENTAL CLEANING 15% OFF

Pets, like people, need regular dental care and we at Indian Creek Pet Hospital are committed to helping you provide your pet with a long, healthy life. Animals who do not receive dental care are at risk of gingivitis, periodontal disease and subsequent kidney, liver and heart problems. Many times, the first sign owners notice of a dental problem is bad breath in their pet. Unfortunately, by this time, periodontitis is already in its 3rd of four stages! What often goes unnoticed is the preceding inflamed gums, plaque and tartar buildup and the accompanying pain which can cause changes in eating habits and behavior.

Particularly at risk are small dog breeds. Experts say that these breeds are more likely to develop tooth problems because their teeth are often crowded into small mouths. This can create a haven for plaque buildup.

We encourage all pet owners to brush their pets teeth and use dental products such as Aquadent, CET chews and Hills Prescription Diet t/d. Having your pet’s teeth professionally cleaned once or twice a year is also highly recommended.

In order to help improve your pet’s dental health, we will be offering our dental cleaning services at a 15% discount during the month of September. A dental cleaning includes pre-anesthetic bloodwork, ultrasonic cleaning, polishing and fluoride treatment and dental x-rays.

Space is limited and available on a first come, first served basis so call today to schedule your pet’s dental cleaning.

1 in 5 dogs are suffering in silence, is yours?

Animals

Does your dog suffer from a lower activity level, stiffness, limping or inability to jump? If so, he may be one of the millions of dogs living with the pain of canine osteoarthritis. Unfortunately, many pet owners confuse these conditions to be signs of just growing old and do not realize their dogs are in pain.

Your dogs health and happiness are what matters most to us. If he is showing any of these signs, we can help. Our hospital takes a “multimodal” approach to joint and mobility care, which means we get the best possible results for pets by using different therapeutic options that work together.

Visit www.treatdogarthritis.com to complete a simple checklist to see if your dog may be at risk of suffering from painful canine osteoarthritis and to learn more about what treatment options are now available. You may also download valuable money saving offers for multimodal products in our office.

If you think your dog may be suffering from the pain of arthritis, please contact our office for an orthopedic appointment and ask us about a multimodal treatment plan that is right for your dog.

Animals, Entertainment, Fort Myers, Non Profit / Charity, Photography

The Octagon  The Octagon, Local Wildlife Sanctuary

A lot of people do not know about the wildlife sanctuary called the Octagon in Fort Myers. This place is a hidden gem within Lee County! It provides a healthy recovery and living environment for abandoned and abused exotic wildlife. NONE of the animals have been taken out of the wild! They all come from abused, injured or unwanted situations.

Octagon is a non-profit, charitable 501(c) (3) organization. Their motto is helping animals in need and that is just what they do!

Volunteers are always needed for the Octagon, if you are an animal lover and would like to donate some of your time to a great and rewarding cause, please check out their link here.

With animals ranging from a Liger (Half Tiger / Half Lion) to a raccoon, the octagon helps them all. It is sad to see many of these animals because they came to the Octagon declawed and abused, through the help of volunteers and Lauri Caron, owner and operator, they on the road to recovery. With well over 100 animals, the Octagonis truly an amazing place. Because the Octagon is a non-profit, volunteers are crucial to the success of the facility and care for these animals. Volunteers range from wonderful veterinaries like Dr. Dieter, Dr. Scott, Dr.Winter, Dr. Bogert, Dr. Folk, to other volunteers who give up Saturdays and Sundays to help out around the 10 acre property.

“What a pleasure to work with Lauri, she is incredible woman, hard working, and passionate. She truely loves what she does and cares so deeply for all of the animals she helps. It is an honor to know her!” Sandy Kostick, owner of the SanibelCaptivaDaily.com.

NEWS JUST IN! J.N. Rare Wildlife Sighting: Florida Black Bear on Sanibel “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge

Animals

Rare Wildlife Sighting: Florida Black Bear on Sanibel
Rare Wildlife Sighting: Florida Black Bear on Sanibel
On Monday June 27 at 5:30am the J.N ‘Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge remote camera capture an image of a Florida Black Bear on the refuge. Lead Biologist, Tara Wertz discovered and verified the sighting today. The bear looks to be a sub adult blackbear approximately 1.5 years old weighing 40-60 pounds. This bear was photographed by a motion activated, infrared camera at the Bailey Tract, 100-acre freshwater satellite parcel of the refuge. This poses NO immediate threat but residents and visitors should take precautionary measures to keep all food and garbage secured and stored inside.
Black bears are native to Florida and are protected under state and federal laws.Dwindling populations in Florida has caused this sub species to be listed as “threatened”under the Endangered Species Act. It is illegal to approach or harass this animal.
Sub adult black bears are kicked out by their mother in early summer at age 1.5 years old.Young males tend to disperse long distances from their natal areas while young females tend to stay close to their mother’s home ranges. Bears are most active at night and are opportunistic feeders, eating almost anything, including grass, insects, small mammals and carrion (dead things).
Please report any sightings to the refuge’s Lead Biologist Tara Wertz at 239/ 472-1100×231.

Conservancy of Southwest Florida unveils new logo, evolves mission and brand
Conservancy retires “Saving Southwest Florida” campaign logo

NAPLES, Fla. (May 19, 2011) –  Upon raising $38.8 million and exceeding its “Saving Southwest Florida” capital campaign goal, the Conservancy of Southwest Florida has retired its campaign logo, unveiling a new logo to represent the “reborn” Conservancy and to evolve the brand identity of the Conservancy.

The Conservancy of Southwest Florida Marketing and Development Committee, chaired by board member Maureen Lerner, provided the leadership and guidance for this important step. Conservancy of Southwest Florida Director of Marketing and Communications Barbara Wilson and Graphic Designer Kate Kintz devoted countless hours of research and explored over 100 potential designs to ensure the logo accurately reflected the Conservancy of Southwest Florida “brand.”

“We believe the new logo represents the next generation of the Conservancy of Southwest Florida,” said Wilson.  “Our research indicated that logo revision is a very disciplined, deliberate process, and we did not take on the task lightly. We adhered to the best practices and guidelines for logo revisions implemented by environmental organizations and some of the largest brands in the world as they evolved their mission and brand.”

Wilson added that it was very important to keep the rich history of the Conservancy in the new logo.  “We accomplished this by maintaining the historical green color, the typeface and the eagle, all core elements of the previous logo,” she said. “The eagle, although updated, is still the main feature. It has been part of Conservancy history from the beginning. Its keen eyesight keeps track of our environment. Furthermore, the eagle is a brave animal and is not afraid to stand up for what is right. Once on the endangered species list, it represents hope for all native wildlife. We added the blue color to represent the water element of our mission, while the green represents the land. All three elements, the water, land and wildlife, capture the essence of our mission.  Lastly, the new color yellow was added to signify the dawning of a new age and a bright future for the Conservancy of Southwest Florida, the community and our quality of life.”

About the Conservancy of Southwest Florida:
The Conservancy of Southwest Florida began in 1964 when community leaders came together to defeat a proposed “Road to Nowhere” and spearheaded the acquisition and protection of Rookery Bay. The Conservancy is a not-for-profit grassroots organization focused on the critical environmental issues of the Southwest Florida region with a mission to protect the region’s water, land and wildlife.  This is accomplished through the combined efforts of environmental education, science and research, policy and advocacy and wildlife rehabilitation. The Wildlife Rehabilitation Clinic treats more than 2,400 injured, sick and orphaned animals each year and releases about half of them back into their native habitats. The Conservancy of Southwest Florida and Nature Center is located in Naples, Fla. at 1450 Merrihue Dr., off Goodlette-Frank Road at 14th Avenue North. For information about the Conservancy of Southwest Florida, call 239-262-0304 or visit www.conservancy.org.

Dog needs a home.

G’day! The following letter is from a client of Bark Busters in need of a new home for her dog.  This dog comes with a training guarantee which is valid anywhere in the world where there is a Bark Buster trainer but does expire on February 14, 2012.  If you are able to help, please contact the owner directly.

Hello.  My name is Lovee.  They call me that because I love “everything.”  I love kids, people, other dogs and life!  I am almost a year old, am half Shih Tzu, weigh about 23 lbs. and am spayed.  My owners love me so much but have developed physical problems that make it difficult to care for me.  I have lots of energy.  Mom says I am cute and sweet but wants the best for me.

If you are interested in meeting call (239) 592-0679.

Name: Linkin
ID #: 503685
Breed: American Bull Dog Mix

Sex: Male

Age: 2 months

Color: White & Brindle

Comments: I’m a young, playful, loving puppy that’s going to be a big dog.  The good news is there’s lots of love to go around because I have six brothers and sisters that are also available for adoption.  A dog that could be 65 to 130 lbs. may sound like more dog than you want but just like any other puppy we need love, training, and attention and we can be awesome family members.  The shelter is taking applications on all of us puppies to find us the right home.
Adoption Fee: $47.50 during May’s Grand Re-Opening Celebration (all pets may be adopted for half off the regular adoption fee during May).

Pet Bio

Name: Glenda
ID #: 494453
Breed: Domestic Short Hair

Sex: Spayed Female

Age: 2 years old

Color: Cream and white

Comments: As my namesake, Glenda the Good Witch of North, would say, “there’s no place like home!”  I sure hope it’s true because I’ve been wanting a home of my own for a while.  I’m really a good girl and need a good family to love me back.
Adoption Fee: $25 during May’s Grand Re-Opening Celebration (all pets may be adopted for half off the regular adoption fee during May).
