Hands Across the Sand, Fort Myers Beach

At noon today, hundreds of people will join hands on beaches in Fort Myers, Bonita Springs, Sanibel, Marco Island and many other cities around the nation to oppose offshore oil drilling and support clean energy.

Hands Across the Sand is designed to raise awareness of opposition to offshore drilling and support for alternative energy in response to the Gulf oil disaster.

Those who want to participate should meet at 11 a.m. Everyone will join hands for 15 minutes beginning at noon.

Locally, the events are at:

• Bonita Beach (on Hickory Boulevard next to Doc’s Beach House).

• Cape Coral Yacht Club, 5819 Driftwood Parkway (Coronado Parkway south ends at the beach in front of the yacht club).

• Fort Myers Beach Pier on Estero Boulevard.

• Sanibel Island, Lighthouse Beach (Cross causeway, turn left onto Periwinkle Way. Drive to end; Lighthouse Beach and parking are there.)

• On Marco Island, an event is set for South Beach, at the south end of Collier Boulevard.

The local events are part of the 820 Hands Across the Sand events that will be held around the world, according to the Sierra Club of St. Petersburg.

About 730 events will be held in the U.S. There will be events in 509 different U.S. cities and events will be held in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.

The Hands Across the Sand project is voluntary and doesn’t raise money.

Hands Across the Sand got its start in February when about 10,000 people joined hands at 60 cities and towns in Florida to protest a move in the state Legislature to allow near-shore oil drilling in state waters.
